“Handbook for the Point Puer database : “The Point Puer lads” / handbook and database compiled and edited by Robin McLachlan ; with an essay on Point Puer by Peter Macfie.
Summary
This set of data was originally in manual form and then assessed with a computer system. The ‘Handbook’ was provided with an Apple II disk copy of a spreadsheet of the data used. Since this format is now outdated, an updated .xlsx spreadsheet of the data has been provided here. Note that codes are available in the handbook and also in the ‘Excerpt’ below.

Excerpt (codes used in spreadsheet)
12. LIST AGE: This is the age of the boy at the time of the compilation of the respective list. For the 1835 boys, the age at the time of the list is given in the list. For 1841 boys, it has been calculated in the same manner as the BORN and TRIAL AGE data.
13. OFFENCES: This is the number of times the individual was punished for an offence while at Point Puer between date of arrival and date of respective list. The information for this field was obtained from the Conduct Registers. Like many manuscript documents dealing with convicts, the registers are difficult to read and often incomplete. A number of offences has been provided only if the editor was fiarly confident that the original record was reliable and complete. The value ‘999’ indicates that the record of offences is not available or that what is available has been regarded as unreliable.
It is possible some of the 999s could be 0s (no offences) but it is impossible to know for certain. Other sources indicate that there were boys who had unblemished records, but there were far more who had somethign on their record.
Codes used : 999 – not known
14. FREED: This is the year in which the individual received his fredom, either by Pardon or Freedom by Servitude, according to the Conduct Registers. The field does not record the granting of a TIcket-of-Leave or reclassification of the prisoner.
The following codes were used for some records:
97 – Freedom was granted, but subsequently revoked and not re-granted, according to the Conduct Register.
98 – Re-sentenced to life or long term sentence before being granted freedom; not known if ever granted freedom.
99 – Died in Servitude.
999 – Records incomplete or illegible, not known if granted freedom. It seems likely many 999s were granted freedom, but when?
