A reproduction of the list of birds seen on the Tasman Peninsula (mostly around Koonya) by James Roxburgh McClymont who lived there in the 1880s.Included are some background notes on McClymont’s life. The original list was published in the papers of the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1887.

  1. Astur novae hollandiae, Gwelin. White Goshawk. Two or three seen within the last four years.
  2. Uroaetus audax, Wedge-tailed Eagle.
  3. Halliaetus leucogaster, Gmelin. Grey-backed Sea Eagle. One seen on the Eastern Coast near Tasman’s Arch
  4. Hieracidea orientalis, Schlegel. Brown Hawk
  5. Ninox boobook, Latham. Brown Hawk Owl. (Ewing in Tas. Jour, i.53).
  6. Ninox maculata, and Horsf. Spotted Hawk Owl. Often heard. One was caught in the kitchen of a house, having flown in.

  1. Calyptorhynchus xanthonotus, Gould. Black Cockatoo. Said by the country people to presage rain.
  2. Platycercus flaviventris, Temminck. Yellow-bellied parakeet.

  1. Cuculus pallidus, Latham. Pallid Cuckoo.

  3. Podargus cuvieri, and Horsf. More Pork. About the old buildings, from which it is difficult to dislodge them, even with sticks and stones.
